January Tot School Recap

Posted: February 4, 2013 in Uncategorized

It’s taken a bit to get back in our groove after the holidays, but we did enjoy some fun activities this month. Here are some things we did…and some things we will save for next year. 🙂

Bible Verse: “Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.” Psalm 51:7b

Book: Winter (Touch and Feel) – They loved this one!

Color Focus: White

Letter Focus: Ww

W is for Winter Sheet – with glitter…oh, the glitter…

Music (Mondays): Grooveshark Playlist – not much here…need to find some more music next year

Snowey Pokey (you put your right mitten in…) – fun!

ABC Snowman Chant

Build a snowman just for me.

Please don’t let him melt away.

Is he melting? No, no, no!

Down he melts away from me.

I’ll build him again – just wait and see!

Mitten Pair Song

Each mitten has a mate, has a mate.
Each mitten has a mate, has a mate.
Can (child’s name) find the pair?
(He/She) is looking here and there.
Can (child’s name) find the mate,
Find the mate?

White Song – Frog Street Press
(Tune: Little Brown Jug)
That spells white.
Sing with me.
Milk is white, and so is glue.
Ghosts are white,
And they say BOO!
That spells white,
Sing with me.
The clouds are above
The snow below,
Santa’s beard,

Ho! Ho! Ho!

Ten Little Snowmen – They loved this one (since they also love the “Five Little Monkeys” song.)

Ten Little Snowmen riding on a sled,

One fell off and bumped his head.

Frosty called the doctor and the doctor said,

“No more snowmen riding on the sled!”

Art Exploration/Dramatic Play (Tuesdays):

Snow painting – We might have to hold off on this one until we get a little more snow that sticks, but I am excited for them to try it!

Epsom salt snowflakes – saving for next year

Mitten Handprint – hard to get handprints for now…choosing my battles 🙂

Writing on a chalkboard with white chalk – a success!

Felt Snowman – I took the Christmas tree idea and made a snowman for the girls to decorate. They seemed to like this one! We also sang while we decorated him/her.

(To the tune of “Happy Birthday to You.”

Here’s a hat for you…

Here’s two eyes for you…

Here’s a carrot nose for you…

Science/Sensory (Wednesdays):

Winter Sensory Bin – Sensory bins are our favorite activity, and this one (with fake snow) was a success!

Cloud Dough – I used olive oil instead of baby oil in case Fairley eats it. She has a thing for eating playdoh right now. They loved this one, but it was a little messier than I was expecting…

Cool Whip “Snow” – So fun! E was a little timid at first, but Fairley dove right in! Eventually they both ended up playing with (and eating) lots of “snow”!

Winter Snow Walk – We’ve seen just a little bit of snow this year, so we might have to save this one for later in the season or next year.

Math (Thursdays):

Exploring spheres – snowmen (Original idea- using styrofoam balls of different sizes) Or you can use three different sized boxes (Mommy School idea) and explore cubes!

-We ended up using small styrofoam balls in our sensory bin instead, and the girls loved this. They also liked to fill a jar with them, so we practiced counting as we filled the jars.

Snack: Jello Jiggler Ice blocks – Fairley loved them; E was not a fan.
