Here’s What Happened During Our First Month of Tot School

Posted: November 2, 2012 in Uncategorized

So we didn’t actually stick to the plan we made for each chosen day (maybe we will in the future once we get in a better routine), but we did get a chance to try out these activities  Here’s what actually went down…

Bible Verse:
“For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness…”
2 Corinthians 4:6
-We used a flashlight to talk about the difference between light and dark and how dark our hearts are without Christ.

Color Focus: Orange -We went on a color hunt and found toys that are orange.

We made an “orange bag.”

-We went to the store and chose pumpkins and talked about their color. When we got home, we also investigated all the pumpkins, talked about how they felt, how they looked, etc.

-We also mixed pink and yellow edible paint to make the color orange.

Letter Focus: Pp

Throughout our day, I pointed out words that started with the /p/ sound, and  Emma practiced making this fun sound!

Book: The Pumpkin Gospel This was such a great book to explain the gospel with a visual.

Music: October 2012 Tot School Grooveshark Station

“This Little Light of Mine”

Pumpkin Songs – from this website.

This was our favorite: Pumpkin song (tune: I’m a little teapot)

I’m a little pumpkin Orange and round. Here is my stem, There is the ground. When I get all cut up, Don’t you shout! Just open me up And scoop me out!

Art Exploration (Tuesdays):

P Is for Pumpkin –  We used edible paint. Pumpkin Handprints – Handprints aren’t a favorite activity at this age, but moms always appreciate having them, so we did this activity. :)

Science/Sensory:

-Pumpkin Playdoh – We made five balls out of the playdoh and sang the song “Five Little Pumpkins” (making one roll away during each verse).

-Carving and exploring the inside of  a pumpkin – I got to do this with Fairley, and she loved it. I’m still hoping to try to carve our big pumpkin with E.

Glow-in-the-dark Orange Bath – We used glow sticks for this. E wasn’t really a fan of being in the “dark,” so this is something we might hold off on doing again until the girls are a little older.

Math:

-Comparing small, medium, and large pumpkins- We talked about size and other visible/tangible characteristics of our pumpkins.

-We also bowled with our pumpkins. (We used a pumpkin to knock down plastic bottles.

-Counting pumpkin seeds –  We didn’t really “count” them, but this is something we could probably do more of next year. We might save them and use them as a sensory medium for next month’s activities.

Snack (Whenever possible): English Muffin Pumpkins – This wasn’t E’s favorite, as I had suspected. She liked Halloween-shaped pretzels better!

Extra Activities: We took a trip to the library to find a pumpkin book!

Here’s what I would want to include next time that we didn’t get to this time:

Orange Bath – Color the water orange and add an orange scent, play with orange toys

Here are some pictures from our month of fun! (Ignore the repeated pictures…sorry I don’t have time to remove them!)
